The album also features jazzier, slower tracks like The Little Things and Chinatown. The album closes with Great Expectations. This song is a mix of folk and distortion AOR which could sound completely wrong but actually works very well.
After Toto IV, the band's fortunes changed to the downside. David Hungate left to concentrate on his solo career, and the band went through numerous drummers. In 1984, Bobby Kimball was fired from the band in wake of drug charges and the band continued as a trio featuring Michael Porcaro and Steve Lukather.
Despite the turbulence, Toto forged ahead and released Isolation however, which was not as successful as IV. Line-up
The album's third, Turn Back, marked the return to the traditional sextet style of previous albums. It was a more powerful, consistent effort with an edge that was stronger than Hydra. Its edgier sound reflected the maturation of the group and included drummer Bobby Kimball's greater virtuosity on drums, and a more confident, mature vocal delivery by singer Joseph Williams. David Paich's keyboard skills were as well more refined, more precise and less akin to earlier efforts.
After touring to promote their album, the group recorded an Amsterdam live concert which was released on Eagle Records as a 2-CD set titled Falling In Between. The group released a new studio album a few months later, and went on a world tour promote it. In this time, keyboardist Greg Phillinganes filled in for Paich and bassist David Hungate left the group to spend more time with his family.
In 1998, Paich and Lukather started looking through old demo tapes and tapes to make an album that would feature songs that had never been recorded before. It was completed as a double-album titled Then and Now in 2001. It was the first album in the band's history not to include any single song that had the word "A" in its title. It also included one previously not released track, "Kari-Anne".
By 2003, Toto had begun to decline in popularity. The group's fourth record, Old Is New was a commercial failure and vocalist Williams was suffering from laryngitis, which restricted his singing capabilities. In addition, Hungate returned to Nashville, while drummer Leland Sklar was replaced by Shem von Schroeck.
Downes, Wetton Palmer and Howe, the original members of Asia, met in England early in 2006 to discuss the possibility that the band could be reformed. This lineup, minus Howe (who was a member of Yes at the time) was eventually referred to as Toto XIV and toured extensively.
In 2010, the band reunited for another reunion tour with a slightly different line-up, including guitarists Mike Porcaro and Steve Lukather, drummer John Pierce, bassist Shannon Forrest, and multi-instrumentalists Warren Ham and Dominique Taplin. The band also featured an appearance by singer Michael McDonald, and a backing singer named Mabvuto Carpenter.
